Simon is to buy a woolen sweater, a raincoat, a warm coat and a hat. He is going to the shop, to «Men’s clothes» department.
Simon says: «Please, show me this sweater». The shop-assistant asks: «This one? The blue one?»
«No», – Simon answers, – «Please, show me the black one. Yes, I think it is my size. And I like this colour. I’ll take it».
Then Simon is looking at the raincoats. But all of them are very large in size and Simon doesn’t like the colours. Coats are not
fine either. Simon thinks he’ll buy not a coat, but a jacket. A leather-jacket is modern and comfortable clothes.

Helen is going to the «Women clothes» department. Beautiful dresses, fashionable skirts, blouses, coloured scarves, cosmetics
are sold there. Helen likes these things. She thinks to buy a blue blouse and a black skirt.

Winter is coming. John and Mike know that winter is cold in the town where they live and study now. They are going to the
shop to buy warm clothes. And now they are at the department store. Coats and suits are sold there. John is buying a warm and nice
suit and Mike is buying a winter coat. At the department «Men footwear» shoes and boots are sold. John is buying boots. Mike has
boots and he is buying shoes. Then they are going to the first floor. There the friends are buying winter hats and gloves. John is very
tired and he wants to go home. But Mike remembered that he was to buy some copy-books and pencils. What will they do? It is nec-
essary to buy.
Mike buys four copy-books and two pencils and asks how much it is. Mike pays some money to the cash-desk. Now they are go-
ing home.

This is our preparatory faculty. This building is beautiful, isn’t it? We, foreign students, study here. Our Dean’s Office and our
chair are on the first floor. On the ground floor there is a snack bar. Here we can have some tea, coffee, eat a cake or a plum-cake.
A student library is on the ground floor, but in another building.
This is our classroom. It is on the second floor. The room is not very large, but it is light and comfortable. There is a large black-
board, a table and a map on the wall. Our textbooks, exercise-books, pens are on the desks.
Now it is a lesson. It is quiet in the classroom. We are doing a test.

I am a foreign student. My name is Andrew. My friends are foreign students too. We study at the preparatory faculty of Tambov
State Technical University. We live in the student hostel. Our hostel is in Mitchurinskaya Street.
I live in the room of a modest size on the second floor. There is a table, a cupboard chairs, beds, bedside tables there.
We study much: we read, write, speak Russian. In the evenings when we have some free time, we rest: we listen to music, watch
TV, read newspapers and magazines. I like to listen to folk songs. Sometimes we sing too. I like to watch TV. I watch the sport and
music programmes. My friend likes to read very much, especially detective stories. Every evening he reads newspapers and maga-
zines. Sometimes we go for a walk in the Park of Culture and Rest or we go to the cinema to watch a new film.

In Russia an academic year begins on the first of September in all the schools, Institutes and Universities. It lasts for 9 or 10
months.
At the Institutes and Universities an academic year is divided into two terms. The first term begins in September and ends in
January. In January and June students pass their tests and exams. After exams students have their holidays. Winter holidays last for 2
weeks. The second term begins in February and ends in June. Summer examinations begin in June. Sometimes exams can begin ear-
lier, for example, in May, if students should go to their practical work.

Fatima has a friend. Her name is Tanya. She studies at the Musical Institute on the first course. Tanya plays piano. When Tanya
speaks Russian fast Fatima understands her badly. That is why Tanya repeats every phrase several times. Tanya helps Fatima often.
They speak Russian much. The girls not only study together, but and have a rest together. They are fond of cinema and music and
sport. The girls play tennis often.

My name is Matthew. I study at T S T U at a preparatory faculty.
Now it is a Russian lesson. There are textbooks, exercise-books, dictionaries, pens on the desks. We are reading a text, and our
teacher is writing some words on the blackboards. Then the teacher is asking the questions and we are answering the questions. All
the students are answering correctly, without mistakes. After my classes I work at the library. I write exercises, read texts, revise some
grammar rules, words. In the evening I go to the hostel. My room is on the third floor. I have supper and rest there. I read a newspa-
per, listen to music, watch TV. I like musical programmes very much and I always watch them with pleasure. It is autumn in Tambov
now. It often rains. But when the weather is fine, I like to go for a walk in the park.

It is morning now. All are in a hurry to work. Students are also in a hurry to the University. And this is OlgaVictorovna. She is a
doctor. Her husband is a doctor too. They are going to the office by bus. They work at a student hospital.
And where is Tim going to? He is going to the airport. He is in a hurry and is going by taxi.
