SUBMARINE CABLE INSULATION
Telegraphic instruments had been developed, notably by Schilling, Morse and Cooke
and Wheatstone, for the transmission of signals over land lines; and a suitable material for
insulating the conductor had already been introduced into Europe. This was gutta percha,
the gum from Malayan tree, exhibited at the Royal Society of Arts in London by Dr.
Montgomerie in 1843. The electrical and mechanical properties of gutta percha, especially
when immersed in sea water, were such that it had no rival for over 70 years as an
insulant in submarine cables. Moreover, the Gutta Percha Company had been formed in
1845-46 to exploit its use, and primitive extruders had been constructed for the production
of rods and tubes.
Before 1849, many attempts had been made to find a suitable insulant or protection
for underground and underwater cables, including glass tubes, but none of these lasted
long in the sea. In 1847 Werner Siemens used gutta percha for an underground line in
Germany, and some was laid in the Port of Kiel in 1848 for the purpose of detonating
mines. In America in the same year, Armstrong experimented with gutta percha covered
wire in the Hudson River, where Exra Cornell had previously connected Fort Lee with
New York by a rubber insulated line which worked for several months.
