AINTAINING THE PERMANENT WAY
(1) The maintenance of the railway permanent way is a vitally important task which
is the responsibility of the Chief Civil Engineer (CCE). Both future railway business and
present-day safety of railway operation depend on proper railway maintenance work.
(2) To the civil engineer on British Rail, permanent way maintenance splits into
four categories:
- Complete renewal is usually called ‘relaying’ and is often executed simultane-
ously with reballasting or formation work.
- Earthworks and reballasting. On major routes, relaying and reballasting are prac-
tically inseparable today. Ballast-cleaning machines (BCMs) or excavators are used to
carry out this work. Earthworks comprise formation renewal, drainage works and stabili-
zation of embankment or cutting slopes.
