Ex. 9. Go back to paragraph 5 of the text. These are the dictionary
definitions of the words you’ve come across while reading this paragraph. Can
you find the words in the text and translate them into Russian?

beliefs and experiences;
b) an official paper showing that permission has been given to do something,
usually in return for a fixed payment.
Ex. 10. Each of the sentences below is followed by two paraphrases.
Decide which paraphrase (a, b) is closer in meaning to the original comment.
Translate the original comment and the paraphrases into Russian.
1. We have a long history of having our locs built under license in Europe, so we
are well placed to continue to serve the market.
a) For a long time we have been producing our locs in Europe, that’s why we
have great experience and can continue our business.
b) Our company is very old, and we have our enterprises in many European
cities.
2. Once we see the smaller fleets established in Europe, I think the effect of
people seeing the new locomotives in operation will have a knock-out effect with an
increase in the size of subsequent orders.
a) The moment people see our locs they will be shocked because the
locomotives look very strange.
b) The more locs will be supplied to Europe the more effect it will have on the
amount of subsequent orders, because we will find them more powerful,
convenient and suitable to their needs.
