someone in the eye can cause problems. A boss who looks directly in a subordinate’s

eyes is seen as judgmental and harsh. A subordinate who looks the boss in the eye is

seen as hostile and overly aggressive.

Rule 7: Learn the language. Ability to speak the language helps attune you to the

local culture and makes an overseas assignment much easier. In addition, it will greatly

aid communicating with business associates. Remember that if you are engaged in

exporting, the language of international business is that of the customer.

Rule 8: Don't trust people just because they speak

English. Ability to speak a language means only that.

Don't assume that this ability also means the person

is more competent, knowledgable, and intelligent.

Also take care not to assume those that cannot speak

English are dumb or incompetent.
