If you do not control your time, others will control it for you. To achieve your job
and career objectives, you must strive to control your own environment.
«On the contrary, he’s always treated me like a brother: surly, rude,
uncompromising.»
Effective job and career management are contingent upon effective self-
management which, in turn, is contingent upon effective time management.
Diagnose the real causes of time-wasting before attempting to solve time-
management problems. Questions to ask yourself include: Are "trivia traps" only
symptoms or are they the real reasons for the poor use of time? Are there inherent
personality factors that affect how you manage your time?
Use the principle of return on investment. Estimate the value of each task on a
scale of 1 to 10. By dividing the task value by the time available, you get the "return on
investment." The higher the number, the higher the rate of return. Organizing your work
schedule to accomplish your highest return tasks is the best approach to time
management.
Effective time management can be learned, but it requires self-discipline.
Recognizing your bad habits and doing something about them is essential.
Learn to concentrate on the "critical few" and eliminate the "trivial many" when
striving to manage your time more effectively (see 1 above).
Since your responsibilities will always exceed your capacity to carry them out, you
must learn to delegate. Never undertake what you can delegate.
Although effective time management will increase the quantity of your efforts, it is
the quality of the results that really count.
Time is an inflexible, irreplaceable resource that deserves the special attention of
engineers and engineering managers. These principles for managing time put into
perspective an aspect of your worklife that is very often hard to pin down. But any
engineer with higher aspirations must be able to master this "timefactor" if he intends to
advance in his career.
