Текст 10. Taking 'Time' to Get Ahead
M. K. BADAWY
Managing time is a task that confronts every engineer and engineering manager.
Uncontrollable factors such as endless meetings, telephone conversations, and routine
paperwork can bring productive output to a screeching halt. And the engineer himself
can be guilty of wasting his valuable time by failing to delegate work, schedule days,
make decisions, and establish priorities.
Learning how to manage time effectively is a key factor in an engineer’s
performance. Effective time management provides greater control over the work
environment and it increases productivity. In order to maximize the use of his time, the
career-minded engineer or technical manager should heed certain principles of time
management.
Understand Pareto's Law, which says that 80% of
our time is spent in accomplishing only 20% of the
results. If you can change the ratio to 75:25 by setting
priorities, you will increase your productivity.
No straight-jacket approach to time management
will fit every manager. What is wasted time for one
manager is not necessarily wasted time for another.
