Since managerial performance depends on fundamental skills rather than on

personality traits, the criterion for identifying potentially successful managers should

not be what a person is, but rather what he does. Such a perspective shifts the emphasis

of evaluation from the qualities that a person possesses (personality), to how the person

handles various situations (performance).

Since performance is the key to a manager's effectiveness, the situation in which he

manages is crucial to his success. People who perform well in one situation may not be

as successful in another. In other words, the manager's particular mix of skills must "fit"

the requirements of the situation to be managed.

For engineers and scientists switching to management, the study of management is

crucial. Since the ingredients of managerial competency can be developed through

study and training, technical people who want to be managers have no excuse for not

getting the education they need. Of course, the development of management skills will

not come about solely by reading books or attending courses. These activities constitute

a first step: they develop knowledge, not skills. The only way to develop the necessary

skills is by putting the knowledge into action through practice.
