Drydocking and Repair
Dialogue
Captain: Good morning, Mr. Jack. I’d like to settle some points on drydocking my
ship.
Dockmaster: I am very glad, Sir, to make your acquantance. What kind of repairs do
you want to be made?
C.: We had some trouble with our propeller during the voyage. I attribute a rather
heavy vibration of the ship to the breakage of a propeller blade.
D.: It might be so. How do you know that a blade has broken off?
C.: I sent a diver to examine the propeller and the rudder and he reported that it was
actually so.
D.: Oh, I see. What type of propeller have you got, a solid one?
C.: No, we’ve got a built-up propeller. We need one blade to be replaced and the other
two straightened, if distorted. Can you cast and machine a blade for our propeller?
D.: What are the scantlings and what kind of material?
C. Approximate size of blade is: length, 1500 mm: breadth, 900 mm: weight, 1000
kilogram’s: material, steinless steel.
D. I think we can meet your requirements. It’ll take about four days. But I can’t tell you
for sure the exact day.
C. Yes, certainly. I expect you to send your tugs tomorrow by 7p.m. Good-bye.
D. Good-bye, Mr. Smirnov. I was glad of the opportunity to meet you.
