Draydocking and Repairs
Dialogue
Chief Engineer: We want your shipyard to undertake some repairs for our ship.
Repair Engineer: What do you want us to do?
Ch.En.: Oh, there’s whole list of repairs to be done. To start with the cylinder liners of
two-stroke engine. We need as much as six cylinder liners. All the dimentions, material
and working of material are shown on this drawing.
R.En.: I see. Cast iron with Brinnel hardness of 180 units. The rings to be made of the
same material but with hardness figure five units higher. What’s the next item on your
list?
Ch.En.: We have got the main bearing to be rebabbitted bored out and then fitted up to
beds, coupling surfaces and shaft. The oil grooves should be scraped out as in the old
ones.
R.En.: That’s clear. Is that all?
Ch.En.: No, you should draw pistons from cylinders for examinstion. Piston heads
must be ultra sound tested. And if there are some cracks in the piston heads, the crack
should be cut out and welded.
R.En.: I suppose we shall be able to do the welding right on the spot. What else have
you got in your list?
Ch.En. Oh, I’ve put down all the items.
R.En. Don’t worry about repairs then. Everything will be done as it should be.
