linked overinterpretation to what he called ‘excess of
wonder’, an excessive propensity to treat as significant
elements which might be simply fortuitous. This
deformation professionelle, as he sees it, ... seems to me, on
the contrary, the best source of the insights into language
and literature that we seek, a quality to be cultivated rather
than shunned. It would be sad if the fear of
“overinterpretation” should lead us to avoid or repress a
state of wonder at the play of texts and interpretation...

given interpretation. Otherwise why should I be concerned
with the opinions of Richard Rorty, Jonathan Culler or
Christine BrookRose? When everybody is wright,
everybody is wrong and I have the right to disregard

6.2.6. Интерпретация как «возврат к истокам»
(мифокритика)
С рубежом ХIХ–ХХ веков связывают активное взаимо
действие и взаимопроникновение культур. Культура осва
ивает ценностные ориентации, свойственные чужим куль
турам, – как сосуществующим с ней, так и существовав
шим до нее. Интерес к ушедшим эпохам свидетельствует
об экстравертивности искусства и сопровождается возрас
танием интереса к глубинным слоям психики. На основа
нии «новой психологии» Фрейда и Юнга способность обес
печивать эффективный контакт с исчезнувшими культур
ными пластами приписывается элементам, вытесненным
