an ordinary car.
To begin with, drivers conditioned by conventional system will likely set
off down the road in an alarming zigzag, steering too much and overcorrecting.
After a few harrowing minutes, the driver learns that tiny inputs produce big
results. This knowledge, however, does not prevent you from driving like a
drunken Shriner.
The Filo’s accelerator and brake controls are on hand grips; a gentle twist
on either side makes the car go faster, and squeezing the pressure pads behind
them brings it to a halt. These are more intuitive than the steering and
surprisingly easy to operate smoothly. You change gears by pressing buttons on
the control column marked “+” and “-”; the clutch is automatic.
Eliminating the usual controls gives the car designer a new freedom. The
Filo’s seats are fixed. The control column, which must contain only electric
cables (or fiber optics), is easily adjusted and swings into place in front of the
driver.
Bertone gave the Filo double doors that open from the center, without a B-
pillar, so that the space inside is emphasized, and entry and exit are easy. There
is room to stretch out, front and rear, on softly upholstered sofas.
The instrument panel, which pops up under the windshield as you start the
engine, can be configured in several ways to provide car information or
navigation, or to play DVDs.
SKF, better known as a bearing manufacture, has a subsidiary company that
supplies fly-by-wire equipment to Airbus. The secret to adapting such systems
to cars is not only in fiendishly complicated computer programs, proving
sensitive control, feedback, and safety backup, but also in developing smart
electromechanical actuators. There are typically electric motors with ball and
roller screws acting directly on the gearbox shafts, brake calipers, steering rack,
or whatever.
The electromechanical SKF systems are simpler than existing hydraulic
arrangements and eliminate the need for fluids, lines, reservoirs, pumps, and
boosters. But there are a couple of preconditions before they become practical
for everyday cars: A power supply of 42 volts will be essential to keep the
electrical components down to a reasonable size, and there must be a vehicle
data network interfacing all the major control systems.
