SEA FOOD OPPORTUNITIES IN SINGAPORE
Sea foods are popular in Singapore among Singaporeans and tourists alike; the total
sales of fin fish alone through wholesale markets in 1982 was 9167 tones. The do-
mestic market can be separated into two categories. The first comprises indigenous
Singaporeans, who are traditionally price-conscious and buy from local markets. The
traditional caution with regard to cost is becoming tempered by an increasing empha-
sis on product quality which has made higher prices more acceptable.
The second is made up of expatriates and middle class Singaporeans who buy from
supermarkets for convenience. This braket of the community is growing rapidly and
can select from a wide range of fresh and frozen sea foods. Both sections of the do-
mestic market prefer fresh sea foods but frozen and prepared food is becoming more
acceptable. In addition Singapore is involved in a substantial catering chandling trade
