day. The police are no protection nowadays. Buggers are the
thing» (E. W., 436)
В первом из этих микротекстов об интенсивности чув
ства свидетельствует употребление избитой, но яркой ме
тафоры и эксплицитная констатация сильного (to the core)
шока. Во втором – прямое упоминание сочувствия и при
чины, его породившей, высказанное в несколько тяжело
весной, официальной форме, но дополненное конкретны
ми рекомендациями по защите от грабителей.
Следующее письмо Д. Г. Лоуренса содержит соболезно
вание по поводу смерти брата его хорошей знакомой:
«My dear Lady Cynthia,
What can one say about your brother’s death except that
it should not be.
How long will the nations continue to empty the future –
it is your own phrase – think what it means – I am sick in my
soul, sick to death. But not angry any more, only
unfathomably miserable about it all. I think I shall go away
to America if they will let me...
Don’t think I am not sorry about your brother – it makes
me tremble. Don’t think I want to hurt you – or anybody – I
would do anything rather. But now I feel like a blind man
who would put his eyes out rather than stand witness to a
colossal and deliberate horror» (D. H. L., 87–88).
