That is a great temptation because one rather hates mankind
nowadays. But pazienza, sempre pazienza! I am learning
Spanish slowly, too» (D. H. L., 144).
«The autumn always gets me badly, as it breaks into
colours. I want to go south, where there is no autumn, where
the cold doesn’t crounch over one like a snowleopard
waiting to pounce. The heart of the North is dead, and the
fingers of cold are corpse fingers. There’s no more hope
northwards, and the salt of its inspiration is the tingling of
the viaticum on the tongue» (D. H. L., 150).
«I don’t feel like going back to America... I feel a
revulsion from America, from going west. I am even
learning a bit of Russian, to go to Russia...» (D. H. L., 154).
«Here I am – London – gloom – yellow air – bad cold – bed
– old house – Morris wallpaper – visitors – English voices –
tea in old cups – poor D. H. L. perfectly miserable, as if he
was in his tomb» (D. H. L., 146).
В последнем примере следует обратить внимание на
синтаксис и графические средства выдвижения эмоцио
нального состояния. Фрагментарность описания, лома
ный скачкообразный ритм, напоминающий судорожные
выдыхания умирающего человека, вполне соответствует
образному сравнению ощущений автора письма с пребы
ванием в могиле. Безусловно, примеры подобные выше
приведенным, можно найти и у других авторов. Чертой
индивидуального стиля писем Лоуренса их можно счи
тать, исходя из высокой плотности таких синкретичных
проявлений категории эмотивности и хронотопа в его
письмах.
