4) I wished I was dead, seeing in death not a frightening
absence of life, but a sleeping without pain.(4)I began
repeating over and over again in my mind in a jerky rhythm,
“I wish I were dead, I wish I were dead, I wish I were dead”.
5) I found , after a few days, that by jerking my head from
side to side to the rhythm of the repeated words, I achieved a
mental distraction that brought relief from the pain. 6) By
keeping my eyes open as I flung my head from side to side on
the pillow, the white ceiling soon became blurred and the bed
upon which I lay rose on wings from the floor. 7) Beyond this
first dizzy state was a nebulous clouded place wherein I swung
in mighty curves through darkness and light free from pain
but gripped by nausea. 8) Here I remained until the will to
continue tossing my head was lost to me and I slowly returned,
moving towards formless shadows that shimmered and
swayed and then materialised into the beds and windows and
walls of the ward. 9) I usually sought this relief at night but
sometimes, if the pain was bad, I did it in the daytime when
the nurses were out of the ward» (A. M., 58–59).
В первом предложении называются чувства, которые
испытывает рассказчик (angry defiance, despair, fear).
Второе и третье предложения содержат кинематическое
описание указанных эмоций (began to cry, cried silently,
gazing openeyed through my tears). В четвертом предложе
нии интенсивность переживаемого чувства достигает пре
дела, что выражается желанием смерти, которая не так
страшна, как бессонные ночи, полные страданий. Стилис
тически это представлено антитезой. Пятое и шестое пред
ложения отражают поиск выхода из травмирующей ситу
ации. В заключительной части микротекста сообщается о
реакции на попытку избавиться от страданий (free from
pain but gripped by nausea) и о том, в какое время и при
каких обстоятельствах рассказчик делал такие попытки.
