General cutting is one of the oldest arts,

practiced in the Stone Ages, but the cutting of

metals was not found possible until the 18th

century, and its detailed study started about a

hundred years ago (Tresca 1878, Taylor 1907).

Much of the progress in metal cutting can be

associated with the introduction of high-speed

steel tools by Taylor and the later use of cemented carbide tools (Schröter 1923). Each

of these permitted a large increase in the rate of metal removal and required lathes of

greater capacity. Advances in lathe design followed and the problems of stress and

temperature distribution in tools became more important. This gave an impetus to

fundamental studies which really began seriously at about this time with a classification

of chip form and discussions of the processes by which a chip could be separated from

the workpiece. Such discussions have continued ever since and there is now a fairly

extensive qualitative literature on metal cutting and the principles involved. Only quite

recently has this begun to develop into a detailed quantitative understanding of the
