Marshal resources: In addition to the human resources necessary for manning the
plan, you must establish what other resources and facilities are required for
implementing the plan. These resources will vary, depending on the nature of the
project. For ease of analysis, resources should be categorized. For example, a
production plan can be broken down in terms of raw materials, fittings and supplies,
production equipment, auxiliary equipment, standby equipment, handling equipment,
and packing materials.
Determine procedures for implementation: What methods must be employed for
putting the plan into action? The more concise you have been in carrying out the
previous steps of the planning process, the easier you will be able to answer that
question. The answer must not be general or ambiguous; it must identify precisely how
the plan will be executed.
Estimate costs: Cost considerations are
prime factors in all projects and must be
explicitly stated and always kept in mind. Your
main concern at this point should be in getting
the job done within the budget and available
resources. Unrealistic deadlines will produce
nothing but frustration for both you and your
staff.
Provide for follow-up: Built-in control mechanisms should be established for the
purpose of reviewing operations and correcting problems. These mechanisms should
ensure up-to-date information about the status of the plan and make provisions for
progress reports so that the necessary adjustments can be made on time. Review
procedures should employ specific yardsticks based on predetermined planning
objectives. In the case of large, expensive projects, contingency plans should be
developed in case the original plan fails.
