Radiotelephony at sea. Communication with a fishing ship
Russian trawler “Sputnik”, this is “Grimsby” calling. Come in, please. Over.
“Grimsby” this is “Sputnik”. I read you. Over.
Hello. Please transfer to channel 10.
Yes, I am changing to channel 10.
Sputnik, this is Grimsby. How do you read me?
Grimsby, I read you well.
We are getting closer to each other. When will you have up (haul) your
trawl on board?
In about 20 minutes.
I’ll have to turn to starboard and pass (cross) astern of you. What is the
length of your warps?
The warps are 800 metres long.
Which trawl are you using now-bottom or midwater (pelagic)?
Midwater trawl.
At what distance from the bottom are you towing your trawl?
Between 2 and 5 metres.
Could you increase your speed a little?
Yes, I can increase the speed up to 5 knots.
What’s your course now?
My true course is 250 degrees. But I have made correction for a 10 de-
gree-drift to starboard, so I’m steering for 260 degrees.
What’s your catch per trawling?
About 3 tons.
I have started heaving up the travel. Mind it when passing me.
I’ll cross ahead of you.
I am towing a midwater trawl at the moment. Look out.
Yes, I see that. I’ll pass clear of you.
Sputnik this is Grimsby. Our trawls have fouled I’ve stopped the engine
and let go the warps from the stopper. Call your captain to the telephone, please.
