        Однако гораздо чаще русские крылатые слова и образные выражения
имеют один предпочтительный устойчивый вариант при переводе на
английский. Так, выражение схватиться за бока от смеха обычно переводится
на английский язык to split one’s sides with laughter; ходить вокруг да около to
beat about the bush; кануть в вечность to sink into oblivion; взрыв хохота roars of
laughter; блестящая возможность golden opportunity; волк в овечьей шкуре wolf
in sheep’s clothing; у него волосы встали дыбом his hair stood on end; с глаз
долой, из сердца вон out of sight, out of mind;
        Даю голову на отсечение I would stake my life on it; у меня это вертится
на языке it’s on the tip of my tongue; гроша медного не стоит it’s not worth a
brass farthing; как с гуся вода like water off a duck’s back; хорошенькое дело that’s
a nice kettle of fish; швыряться деньгами to throw money down the drain; плясать
под чужую дудку to dance to smb.’s tune (piping); плакаться в жилетку to cry on
smb.’s shoulder.
        Конечно, в отдельных контекстах к данным образным выражениям
можно найти и другие эквиваленты, однако те, которые приведены нами,
