1. Deciduous second molars resemble miniature first permanent molars, but the shape of deciduous
first molars is much less typical, having a pronounced mesio-buccal bulge.
2. The frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital bones, forming part of the protective shell for the
brain, are thin plates which interlock with each other like a jigsaw puzzle.
3. The facial skeleton contains bones, forming the eye sockets, cheeks, nose and jaws.
4. Dental cavities are an infection caused by a combination of carbohydrate-containing foods and
bacteria that live in our mouths.
5. The part of the jaw containing the teeth is a ridge of bone called the alveolar process.
6. The loss of bony tissue does not necessarily entail loss of function, but it may do so, often
causing very considerable interference with the patient’s normal mastication and appearance.
7. Pain messages passing along a nerve to the brain cause a sensation of pain in the area supplied
by that nerve.
8. A local anaesthetic injected into the vicinity of a nerve prevents the passage of such messages,
thus producing a temporary local anaesthesia.
9. Following a thorough clinical examination with a review of past medical and dental history,
impressions of the teeth are taken from which plaster models are made.
10. Depending on the character of the fracture and involvement of adjacent parts, we distinguish
several types of fractures.
11. HIV infection also disrupts the function of B lymphocytes, the part of the immune system that
produces antibodies, often causing them to produce excess antibodies.
12. The polyisoprene-elastomers, being different from the plasticiser in plasticized acrylic, will not
leach out.
13. The body of the lesion is the third zone, lying between the dark zone and the apparently
undamaged surface enamel.
14. Where a margin is severely ditched, it may be more logical to repair that part of the restoration,
concentrating efforts on improving it.
15. Having completed the restorative part of treatment plan, every attempt must be made to ensure
that the patient is able to clean perfectly around the restorations.
